Joshua Davis WriteUp & info

Joshua Davis (born 1971) is an artist in new media: specifically he developed HYPE.js with Branden Hall. Especially he is good at integrating his work with old traditional patterns from other countries.

One of the latest tweet, he mentions that “after enjoying creating full blown classes on skillshare and gumroad… I’ve shifted to smaller more digestible ideas on / I plan on diving into more in-depth/practical behaviors of using creative coding in your daily creative workflow.”

He writes that “Joshua Davis is a designer, technologist, author & artist using creative coding. Since 1995 I’ve used hardware and software to create algorithmic image making & animation.”at his site,

Tested p5.js using codepen – using function setup(), draw(), createCanvas(), createP(), and ellipse(mouseX, mouseY, 15, 15)
To make it work, not void setup(){}, but function setup(){}.

As a result, I set it up javascript version (on Codepen) in addition to processing environment (on Canvas).

I learned the use of array for space traveling stars.
translate (width/2, hight/2); to bring the action that is originating from center of the screen.

“Recreating Vintage Computer Art with Processing” Youtube video by Alexander Miller.
Good processing exercise using parametric equations and its behavior. Inspired by early work using polar cordinate.

Joshua Davis give updates that HYPE is processing instead of FL explanation to people who had been using HYPE. So the procedure is sketchy.

Question: how to add HYPE library to processing sketch book?

Reviewed Joshua Davis‘ following sites and videos:
Sunday January 17, 2010 / HYPE ver 1.1.1 launched today and Branden Hall
He uses Flash application to run his HYPE. HYPE is probably a set of libraries that he created.
His created a new class ContextSavePNG which allows you to rip your small Flash canvas to a much larger transparent PNG.

GitHub –, where he has two types: one with Processing and two: his old AS3(FL) version.

SkillShare is a problematic company (google search “skillshare review” list out bad reviews), so I did not make any account. Instead reviewed the vid by Joshua Davis
